Building tools for researchers is not just about features.
It’s about trust.
Over the past few months, while introducing Research Locker to researchers and professionals who regularly purchase journal articles, we’ve learned an important lesson:
Respect and consent matter more than reach.
In this post, I want to share openly what we’ve learned — and how we’re improving.
The Challenge of Reaching Researchers
Researchers are busy.
Between clinical responsibilities, academic writing, grant deadlines, and patient care, inboxes fill up fast. Many work within:
- Universities
- NHS trusts
- Hospitals
- Government institutions
- Regulated environments
These institutions often have strict email security policies. External emails are flagged, links are blocked, and unsolicited communication can feel intrusive.
We understand that.
Our Intention
Research Locker was built to solve a real problem:
Researchers purchase valuable journal articles — but later struggle to:
- Find PDFs again
- Remember which journal they came from
- Track metadata (authors, DOI, publisher)
- Keep articles organized across projects
- Quickly review papers with summaries
Our goal has never been to spam.
It has always been to help.
But intention alone is not enough.
What We’ve Learned
Here are the key lessons we’re applying moving forward:
1️⃣ Permission First
If someone does not wish to receive emails, we immediately remove them — no exceptions.
2️⃣ Institutional Domains Require Extra Care
Healthcare and government domains (.nhs.uk, .gov, etc.) require greater sensitivity and compliance awareness.
We are refining our outreach approach accordingly.
3️⃣ Product Must Speak Louder Than Emails
Instead of pushing via email, we’re focusing on:
- Better on-site experience
- Live DOI testing in the library
- Clearer demo flows
- Educational blog content
- Transparent messaging
Trust builds long-term users.
A Better Way Forward
Instead of mass outreach, we are shifting toward:
- Content-driven discovery
- Product-led growth
- Organic traffic
- Direct referrals
- Transparent communication
Researchers deserve tools that respect their time.
If You’re Exploring Research Organization Tools
If you’ve ever wondered:
- Where did I save that article?
- Which version of the PDF is correct?
- What was the key finding from that paper I bought last month?
You’re not alone.
Research Locker helps you:
✔ Paste a DOI and auto-fetch article details
✔ Upload and organize purchased PDFs
✔ Search by author, journal, publisher, or keyword
